SOLID BRONZE HANDMADE ENGLISH SUNDIALS

While sundials were likely devised as early as 255 B.C., English artist Silas Higgon began making his version in 1985. More than just ornamentation these sundials are working scientific instruments that really tell the time. Higgon crafts each one from solid bronze and inscribes his name on the base. ARMILLARY SPHERES

Although used over 2,000 years ago for the purposes of astronomy, armillary spheres have only been used as sundials for the past 500 years. They usually consist of four bands, the equator band being etched with the hours and the ecliptic with the signs of the zodiac. The shaft of the arrow acts as the gnomon which casts the shadow.

EQUATORIAL DIALS

 The model SDED has a plain rod for the gnomon. Dials of this type were at one time used by the French railways to check their clocks. They are 23 cm (9”) diameter and are adjustable for use at any latitude.

The Model SDEDS has a further adjustment for the longitude and in place of the plain rod, it has two specially shaped gnomons which automatically correct for the equation of time thus reading directly in clock time. They are 23 cm (9”) diameter and are adjustable for use at any latitude.
