In 1990 on their farm, Michel and Pierre Calvet began to manufacture bale grabs for wrapped silage bales as the process of wrapping bales was just starting. Located in an area with a large number of cattle farms gave them an instant market for their high quality products.

As the number of farms using round silage bales grew, a request came for a machine to unwind the round bales to feed to the cattle and in 1993, the first DR160 round bale unwinder was sold.

In 1995, after more consultation with their farmers/customers, it was discovered that some of them were also using the Altec to spread straw. There were already good straw spreaders on the market, so the question was, why use the Altec? It was because the Altec could spread straw silently, without dust and stone ejection and that the machine did not frighten the animals. A request came for a straw spreader option and the “lateral” spreader was developed, as well as the twin “radial” spreaders which can spread straw up to 15 or even 20 feet (4.5 - 6m). The demand for Altec straw spreaders grew rapidly because they were quieter and did not shred the straw, resulting in a healthier atmosphere for the animals and the farmer. More than 8000 in use since 1993.

By 1996, large square bales were becoming popular and Altec made the DR120 that can unwind and spread both round and square bales.

  DR160S - LRSQ

Unwinds large round bales, max. 5’ x 6’ (1.2 x 1.8m) to feed small square baler

• With the speed and convenience that round bales can be made, many farmers are using round bales to get the hay off the field. Later when time permits they are turning the round bales into square bales. The growing market for small square bales for farmers has created this market. The Altec DR160S Bale Unwinder is a valuable tool in the conversion.
• Hydraulically-driven machine sits in front of the pick up of a square baler and is operated hydraulically from the tractor. Bale unwinder control features forward and reverse with speed control.
• Self-adjustable bottom. The drive chains tension changes according to the actual weight of the bale as it unwinds.
• Standard: Cat. II 3-point hitch with offset mount for moving the machine or for use as right-hand side discharge for standard bale unwinding.

• Altec DR160A Lateral spreads straw evenly with rotating spreader. hydraulically operated will spread straw up to 10’ (3m). The lateral spreader works without chopping the straw, with a minimum of dust and without dangerous stone ejection. The length of the straw is preserved giving suppleness to the bedding. When not in use the straw spreader folds easily to the side allowing for hay distribution.

  DR160PA

Similar to the DR160S yet has a built in turntable giving a 180” of rotation. This allows for left, right or rear distribution of material.
